Am I Entitled to a Free NHS Eye Test in Blackburn?
Many people in Blackburn are entitled to a free NHS-funded eye test without realising it. If you qualify, the NHS covers the full cost of your sight test, and you may also receive a voucher towards the cost of glasses. Here is everything you need to know about NHS eye test eligibility, and how to book yours at Eyecare Blackburn.
Who qualifies for a free NHS eye test?
You are entitled to a free NHS sight test if you are:
– Aged under 16 – Aged 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education – Aged 60 or over – Registered blind or partially sighted – Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma – Aged 40 or over and the parent, brother, sister, son or daughter of someone who has glaucoma – Advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma – Eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher
You also qualify if you receive any of the following benefits:
– Income Support – Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance – Income-related Employment and Support Allowance – Pension Credit Guarantee Credit – Universal Credit (subject to meeting the criteria) – You are named on a valid NHS HC2 certificate
What does an NHS eye test include?
An NHS sight test at Eyecare Blackburn is a thorough examination of both your vision and the health of your eyes. As part of your appointment we will:
– Check your vision and determine whether you need glasses or a change in prescription – Take digital photographs of the back of your eye (fundus imaging) – Check for signs of common eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, ocular hypertension and macular degeneration – Assess your overall eye health and discuss any concerns you may have
The test is the same high standard whether you pay privately or qualify under the NHS — the only difference is who covers the cost.
How often can I have an NHS eye test?
For most adults the NHS funds a sight test once every two years. However, some people are entitled to more frequent tests, for example if you are diabetic, have certain eye conditions, or your optometrist recommends it based on your individual needs. We will always advise you on the right recall period for your eyes.
Do I get help towards the cost of glasses?
If you qualify for an NHS sight test through certain benefits or because of a complex prescription, you may also receive an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of your glasses. The value of the voucher depends on the strength of your prescription. Our dispensing team will check your entitlement and apply any voucher you are due, which can be put towards a wide range of frames and lenses in practice.
